The Hiza-contemporary cottage was born out of the designer's admiration for the traditional architecture of the Zagorje region. The untouched nature surrounding the site called for a design that would harmonize with its surroundings. The result is a modern interpretation of the traditional cottage, with straw-covered roofs and basic spaces.
What sets this design apart is the innovative use of materials and the attention to detail. The pre-existing traditional Zagorje cottage was in poor condition and was renovated with the utmost respect for local heritage and design. The house form was preserved, while the porch was replaced with a glass cube that slides out of the main volume, creating an entrance area.
The use of straw on both the roof and walls, along with the wooden plank bearing construction and the aluminum glass cube structure, pays homage to the culture and heritage of the Zagorje region. This combination of materials not only adds a unique aesthetic to the cottage but also creates a healthy living environment that breathes and changes with time.
The realization of this design relied on basic technology and the expertise of local craftsmen. The straw covering on the roof was replaced and extended over the facade, while the gables were newly wood-lined. The existing stone pedestal was preserved, and a newly designed terrace was laid with wooden planks. The entrance walkway was made of tree stumps, further enhancing the organic feel of the cottage.
With a site area of 3865 m2, a built-up area of 230 m2, and a net area of 163 m2, the Hiza-contemporary cottage provides ample space for a large, multi-generational family to enjoy weekend and holiday retreats. Its design seamlessly blends tradition and modernity, creating a unique and inviting space.
The Hiza-contemporary cottage is not only a testament to the designer's creativity and innovation but also a winner of the prestigious A' Design Award in 2015. This Silver A' Design Award recognizes the outstanding expertise and innovation showcased in the design, as well as its strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill.
